With exhibition experiences in Middle-East, Russia, Europe, the U.S., and Japan, Monira Al Qadiri is no doubt an experienced, intercultural artist. Influenced by her stay in Japan, the artist tries to incorporate the animation elements as well as the KUSO (Japanese style humor in comic culture) style of Japan into her artworks of animation and video; furthermore, she works in a variety of creative works including public murals as well. "Abu Athiyya (Father of Pain)" is based on a piece of Iraqi saga, in which the artist herself played a ghost-like entity. Combined with Japanese KUSO style and the cliché of sadness in the Arabic region, the work presents a rare video form in the contemporary art in the Middle-East, in response to the issues of religion, gender, tradition, and pop culture with the force of mockery.
